Inert gas atmosphere

An inert gas is a gas or gas mixture, the purpose of which is to displace the surrounding air, particularly the oxygen. Inert gases are frequently used in foodstuffs packaging. Nitrogen (N) or carbon dioxide (CO2) is normally used, as the two gases are largely inert with respect to chemical reactions.

For the packaging and production of adhesives and sealants, inert gases are used in order to displace the reactive oxygen and the water dissolved in the air. This is to prevent unwanted reactions.
